The rich history and beautiful nature of Arén and its surroundings

Arén is a pretty village located in the Ribagorza region of the province of Huesca. Declared a Historical-Artistic Monument in 1982, the village has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. But the region’s history goes back much further: tthe area around the village was home to dinosaurs some 65 million years ago. Surrounded by a beautiful landscape of mountains, rivers and lakes, the village is a great destination for anyone looking for nature, culture, sports and gastronomy. Whether you want to hike in the mountains, visit the medieval castles, or just enjoy the local cuisine, Arén has something for everyone.

Near the village the river Noguera Ribagorzana flows. This river forms the border between Catalonia and Aragón and connects the lakes Escales in the north and Canelles in the south. So in summer there is plenty of choice for swimming, canoeing or other (water) sports.

Griffon vulture, bearded vulture, Egyptian vulture: it is rare to see all these species together, but in this area it is quite possible.

Everywhere in the landscape you can see historic vestiges like chapels, Roman bridges, defence towers and monasteries. The rich historical heritage is also reflected in the many authentic villages.

One of the most beautiful hiking trails in Europe is the walk through the gorge of Mont Rebei. A half hour drive from the property. The gorge is carved by the river Noguera Ribagorzana and crosses the Montsec mountain range. The gorge can be enjoyed on foot following the ancient mule track carved into the rock. On the other side of the gorge are 2 spectacular wooden stairs that cross the rock vertically. Exploring the gorge by canoe is also an unforgettable experience.

In the surrounding area, there are many opportunities for skiing, fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, paragliding, swimming, etc.
